135 Years of Mentor-Mentee Relationships at HKUMed

On top of classroom learning, medical training traditionally relies on a mentor-mentee model to nurture new doctors. HKUMed has not only produced talented healthcare workers over its 135-year history, but also helped to forge tight bonds between masters and their apprentices. We have created a series to highlight these mentor-mentee relationships and tell us more about how these bonds have taken members of our community to new heights.

“Everyone has a different personality, specialty and future. Thus, I don’t want Dr Li to be like me, I want him to take his own path.”

Professor CS Lau, Dean of Medicine, taught Dr Philip Li (MBBS 2012), Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, when he was a medical student and encouraged him to be the first in Hong Kong to pursue a specialism in immunology and allergy.

From student-teacher turned colleagues and mentor-mentee, Dr Li credits Professor Lau’s support as being vital to his success. We take a look at how they formed their professional relationship and what they have learnt from one another.

“There will always be the temptation to take the easy way out, but I’ve learned from Professor Luk that sometimes the hardest route is the right one.”

A three-month internship in Orthopaedics and Traumatology (O&T) changed the life of Dr Jason Cheung (MBBS 2007). Clinical Associate Professor Dr Cheung reminisced about how Professor Keith Luk (MBBS 1977), Emeritus Professor and Honorary Clinical Professor, piqued his interest in spine surgery and research.

As the current and former heads of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, they discuss how the mentor-mentee relationship shaped their professional journeys.

“I was interested in cancer research and Dr Lee would patiently answer my questions, and I hoped to learn more from him during my summer vacation.”

Simon Law & Ian Wong: The Master and Apprentice Surgeons Who Shun Outdated Traditions

“My philosophy is that we should give new doctors more opportunities to unleash their potential.”

Professor Simon Law, Chair Professor in the Department of Surgery, said he has bucked surgical mentoring traditions by encouraging his mentees to explore new methods instead of forcing them to follow his ways.

One of his ‘disciples’ is Clinical Assistant Professor Dr Ian Wong (MBBS 2007), who early on displayed the qualities needed for a successful surgeon. Seeing a lot of potential in the young doctor, Professor Law wanted to make Dr Wong’s dream of becoming a surgeon come true. Years later, as Dr Wong sought to introduce new surgical techniques to Hong Kong, his mentor supported his efforts.

“Some teachers can be imposing, but she was friendly and didn’t have any airs.”

Dr Sofie Yung (MBBS 2007) first crossed paths with Dr Karen Chan when she was completing her specialty clerkship in obstetrics and gynaecology — her last rotation before her final exams as a medical student — under the direction of Dr Chan.

As a busy medical student, Dr Yung was grateful that Dr Chan’s tutorials centred around a defined topic, allowing students to narrow down their required reading. And she fondly remembers Dr Chan taking the class to the labour ward to familiarise them with the equipment.
