As part of HKUMed's 135th anniversary celebrations, we recreated a series of old photographs to highlight our people and their achievements, walking down the memory lane as we focus on "Building Dreams, Realising Possibilities".

Our graduates: A living testament

In December 1916, the University of Hong Kong held its first congregation, with just 23 graduates. In November 2021, the Medical Faculty alone conferred more than 1,240 degrees at the 205th Congregation.

After 135 years of training students in western medicine in Hong Kong, HKUMed recently ranked at a historic high of 20th position globally and 3rd in Asia for “clinical and health” subjects in the 2022 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Our students: The future of healthcare

Built in 1965, the Li Shu Fan Building marks the beginning of the Medical Faculty’s Sassoon Road Campus. For the first time, it centralised all pre-clinical teaching and was where many famous doctors, and even multiple Deans of Medicine undertook their medical training. With a student body now numbering in the thousands across seven undergraduate programmes this year, we continue to expand our campus. And an ongoing revitalisation of the William MW Mong Block provides improved communal spaces for our students’ everyday learning.

Captured on Medic Night 1962. Once an annual event to encourage students from different years to interact, Medic Night (later replaced by Medic Festival) combined inter-class drama competitions, quizzes and band shows. Today, the COVID-19 pandemic has halted many social events, but a student-led acapella group, Medici Cantano , has livened up our campus with their passion for music. Their voices brought us together on several occasions this academic year. Particularly during the Christmas festivities when their performances helped carry us through these difficult times.

Featured students and members of Medici Cantano (from left to right): Edwin Wu (BChinMed V), Kelvin Cheng, Tiffany Siu, Ian Leung, Asta Lee, Valerie Kwan (all MBBS II).

Using technology to understand patient needs |

Treating babies traditionally posed a challenge for nursing students as they had to understand a patient who could not communicate their needs, however technology now helps bridge that gap. Established in 1995, the School of Nursing (then the Department of Nursing Studies) is a pioneer in adopting innovative technology to enhance students’ clinical competence. In 2021, it introduced the latest high-fidelity baby simulators to give students first-hand experience in assessing and managing common urgent conditions in paediatric nursing. No longer constrained by limited exposure to paediatric patients in clinical settings or the COVID-19 pandemic, these simulators allow our nursing students to further develop their empathy and confidence in a safe learning environment.

A way to serve and give back to society

HKU Open Days are a triennial event when the University opens its doors to the local community. Taking the opportunity to engage with the public on that day in 1989 was the Medical Society’s Health Committee. Since 1972, its active committee members have worked to promote health consciousness among the wider population through various outreach activities. Accompanying their community visits are some trusty tools to help people monitor their health. One is the sphygmomanometer, a blood pressure monitor. Currently, our students are taught to use both digital and manual monitors to ensure they are prepared for all clinical settings.

At the heart of medical research excellence: Our people and technologies

In 1961, HKUMed admitted its first student for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. Six decades later, we have more than 900 research postgraduate students from 35 different countries. As our community of researchers has grown and diversified, so have the facilities and technologies available to them. One area where this evolution is visible is the pipettes our scientists rely on. These core laboratory instruments allow for more efficient and accurate research.

Encountering their first patients: A real and virtual cadaver

The Anatomy Dissection Laboratory and Museum is a sacred place where students from across our medicine, Chinese medicine, nursing, pharmacy and biomedical sciences programmes learn the foundations of healthcare. In recent years, the anatomy team has developed virtual reality software to complement the great body teachers and preserved human specimens used to train our healthcare apprentices. These three-dimensional images allow students to better visualise important structures in the human body during this early stage of their learning.

“Bedside teaching is the opportunity to translate book knowledge into clinical applications.”

“In 1887, the opening of Alice Memorial Hospital played a crucial role in helping our founders establish a medical school in Hong Kong. For 135 years and counting, we have sent our medical students to public and private hospitals across Hong Kong to experience the real-life world of clinical practice. A year-four medical student, Ivan Leung (middle) believes bedside teaching accelerates learning. “It allows you to quickly internalise concepts that would otherwise require years of self-exploration to acquire,” he said.

One big contiguous state-of-the-science medical campus

For almost a century, Sassoon Road has served as the heart of the Medical Faculty. We first arrived in the area in 1937 when clinical teaching was transferred to Queen Mary Hospital – HKUMed’s teaching hospital. Decades later, teaching and research facilities opened on Sassoon Road to produce the next generation of healthcare professionals for Hong Kong.

The addition of a footbridge this month connecting our teaching hospital to the Sassoon Road Campus further aids the flow of knowledge. This enhanced connection comes as the achievements of our scholars reached new heights recently with a record 17 HKUMed academics ranking as ‘2021 Highly Cited Researchers’.

Established on 12 Jan 1914, the Medical Society has since become a quintessential part of life for all HKUMed students. They can enrich their university experience through a wide range of activities, most notably the orientation camps to kickstart their university life, while also fostering a spirit of comradeship and professional unity with their respective programme societies. “Rather than merely fulfilling the so-called ‘five things’ in university, the Medical Society gave me the humbling experience to thrive as a good listener and cooperate with others. It has become an integral part of who I am,” said Pricilla Ng.
